The Circus Hotel | Berlin = Designer Nirvana

by kHyal on April 9, 2010

The Circus Hotel was on a list of hotel partners sent from the folks at Pictoplasma. After some research, including a great article in the New York Times, we booked our stay in Mitte Berlin here. We knew it looked good, but could not have imagined how much we love it. Not only is the aesthetic completely our taste, the materials used are the highest quality, the rain showers are huge, the smart electronics that control the energy are impressive, the views out the two huge windows in our room are exciting, the beds are super comfy, the laptop safes have an outlet inside them for charging devices while locked up, and the service couldn’t be better.

We have never been to a hotel that doesn’t take our credit card to have on hand for additional charges. I handed them my card here, and they said “We trust you, you can just pay when you check out.” They also sat us down when we arrived and asked where we were from, what we were doing and if we needed any informaton.

I am especially fond of the hot pink wall that leads us to our room via red carpet runners on wood floors, and the courtyard garden where you can sit and drink coffee in the morning. I also love the library of art books in the restaurant lounge, where they serve local organic, market-fresh meals. And, when we needed an extra converter for one of our laptops, they pointed to a drawer and told us to help ourselves, same with the movies they have on hand. They only ask you put them back when your done.

The sister property around the corner, The Circus Hostel, has recently been renovated. It, too, is beautifully stylish and hip, and has a great restaurant with chandeliers made of blown glass by the hotel’s designer.

The rooms at the hotel start at 80 Euros, a super-bargain compared to places we have stayed in New York, Paris, Antwerp, London, etc. And, the neighborhood is full of interesting shops and restaurants. (The rooms at the hostel start at just 19 Euros.)

Now on to design philosophy:

As with every element of The Circus Hotel, the design of the rooms and public spaces was influenced by the overall philosophy of the company. At its core our philosophy is a simple one: to welcome travelers to our city in the way we would like to be welcomed when we travel ourselves.

This includes a commitment a quality-orientated approach, travel as a social activity, and an attempt to minimize the negative impact of our activities whilst at the same time making a positive contribution to the life of our staff, guests, the neighborhood and the wider society. When it comes to the design approach at The Circus, this overall philosophy is reflected in a commitment to individuality and authenticity, design that is simple without being minimal, helpful and self-explanatory, and that hopefully makes you smile.

We want The Circus Hotel to be a warm and comfortable place for a guests, and a memorable and valuable part of your trip and not simply a place to rest your head. Travel is all about experience, and your time in the hotel should be a positive part of that.

There’s more where that came from on the website, along with their green hotel policy. Turns out their also rated #1 on Trip Advisor out of 609 hotels, which is based on reviews by people who have actually stayed here. You get the idea … headed to Berlin? Check it out!
