Surplus

Leftovers — extra stuff, overruns and a bargain hunter’s paradise. A revisit to Vulcan Scrap in Stamford, CT. Depending on the day, trucks pull in and drop off loads of copper gutter, twisted electrical cables, radiators and other surplus. It’s amazing what companies and home owners throw in the trash, adding to our landfill nightmares. If you have scrap metal leftover from a project — scrapyard drop offs = cash. Most scrapyards take in materials and pay by the pound — depending on the value — to reclaim and sell to melt down. The cool factor at Vulcan — is they also sell to the public by the pound. Everything and anything in metal, plastic and objects — waiting in scrap gardens to be adopted and turned into something else.

Saturday was a special day — right as I was leaving, I noticed two flat chrome chair frames that looked like modernist furniture. They turned out to be Ludwig Mies van der Rohe‘s 1930 Brno chair frames. Cost — by the pound. Restoration and a new found functional object for our studio.
