Subject to Change: Art and Design in the 20th Century

20thcentury Karl and I are off to RISD again today. This time for ID and Furniture Design student portfolio views, which brings to mind the RISD museum and it’s many treasures.

One of the current exhibitions seems most relevant to our adventure today:  Subject to Change: Art and Design in the 20th Century.

The new Paula and Leonard Granoff Galleries in the 1926 Radeke Building display masterworks of painting, sculpture, furniture, ceramics, drawings, photographs, costume, textiles and industrial design from 1900 to 2000, all drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection. From the work of Henri Matisse and Frank Lloyd Wright to that of Andy Warhol, Lynda Benglis and Ettore Sottsass, the objects convey the last century’s revolutionary changes in art and design, as well as the tremendous impact of technology.

The conceptual design for the exhibition, created by Sandra Wheeler and Alfred Zollinger [RISD '90, Architecture] of Matter Practice, uses cantilevered forms to highlight the relationship between art and architecture. Ed Wojcik [RISD '87, Architecture] Architects restored the beaux-arts elegance of the original architecture. These galleries connect to the Chace Center via The Museum Associates Glass Bridge.
