Street Art | oSTENCILibly transformative

by kHyal on December 22, 2009

While visiting Art Basel Miami this year, we had the happy accident of wandering the Design District looking for a particular something and bumping into a pop-up gallery coordinated by Garrison Buxton of Ad Hoc Art (Ad Hoc Art Gallery on Facebook). It was there we found the work of Peat Wollaeger (StenSOUL), a stencil artist known for his whimsical, raw, and brightly-colored stenciled characters which can be seen on and off the street.

I purchased a small pink and yellow stenciled skull for fiZz HQ which turned out to be a prototype for the piece Peat was commissioned to do for Green Day, based on a song off their latest album. When I returned home, I researched Peat a bit and friended him on Facebook (and I suggest you do, too.) which has led me to new and wonderful discoveries based on Peat’s posts of his stenciling activity and street art links from around the world that inspire him. Such as the artist BToy whose haunting images run the gamut of European vintage to Asian, seemingly comic book inspired characters, that meld into the modern urban backdrops in which they are placed, or float with explosive silence when drawn on sheets of paper.

And, wait, there’s more. Ad Hoc Art Gallery in Brooklyn will be featuring the work of Jef Aerosol, one of the defining movers and shakers in the worlds of stencil and street with a solo exhibit opening Friday, January 29th, 2010. Visit Ad Hoc Art Gallery for more info.

Thanks to Dan Taylor for welcoming us in Miami, and for introducing us to Garrison Buxton. Thanks to Peat Wollaeger for making great art and sharing his inspirations.
