Seeing the Ordinary as Extraordinary

by kHyal on March 20, 2010

AjaxThere are many mundane tasks in life for most of us, but those experiences are full of opportunities to look at things in a new or different way. I can’t stand going into Home Depot. To me, it’s maxed out middle America. However, when I saw the display of Ajax packaging on a recent trip, I smiled.

MeatYourDeadlinesI love Whole Foods, but really dislike the crowds. The way I avoid having a tense experience there is by ignoring the fact that I’m packed in like a sardine with a lot of seemingly unhappy people, and focus on the wonderful shapes and colors of the products. I think food makes great art, and having the activity of taking photos occupies my impatient child self.

How do you see differently? What do you do to keep yourself thinking creatively in ordinary situations?

Your “AJAX” led to thoughts of German photographer, Andres Gursky’s massive row upon row products in every hue and formation; sometimes dulling repetition and other times, like your “AJAX”, clicking in with the imagination. Now I’m thinking of a haibun I wrote to do with your photographic assemblages when you were in Barcelona, “kHyal’s Barcelona”!

DF: I love the haibun you wrote after seeing my view of Barcelona. Even better would be to travel there together one day! xo
