Robot Cookie-cutter Design Experience Doesn’t Make the Grade Anymore

by Karl on December 16, 2009

DifferentMeansToBeDifferentDifferent means to be different — Same is lame. Has your work been labeled the following: unique, innovative, cutting-edge, way-out, cool, funky, hip, dope, da bomb? Probably not.

Are you doing your best work, or just filling the void? Has the excitement left the station? Who does bad design hurt? Everyone. Sounds similar to the commercial for popular depression medication.

I know this rings true for many design professionals who are not pushing and growing their spirit to create real work and keeping it fresh. The market has changed — and it’s going to keep changing rapidly with media, technology and the growth of information.

If you don’t like where you are — change. If you don’t like the work you’re producing — create a personal portfolio of spec work. If your mainstay is print — go interactive. If you’re pixel pusher — get typographic. Everyone who is hiring wants more and more experience with all media. Variety is the spice of life — and will always be.
