R. Nicholas Kuszyk | “Robot Nick” Revisited

by kHyal on February 24, 2011

In the summer of 2009, I bought a small piece by R. Nicholas Kuszyk, aka “Robot Nick.” Soon after, I was hired to install a BlipWorld™ pop-up store as part of a public art project in Bridgeport, CT — where I live and work.

Imagine the serendipitous joy I experienced when I went to install my project and found a giant Robot Nick robot on the wall across the street. It was painted beautifully on the dull green painted plywood covering part of a facade on an empty building on Fairfield Avenue, just down the block from Two Boots.

Luckily, I shot a self portrait in front of it that weekend, because the next time I was on Fairfield Avenue, I noted that this national treasure had been painted green to match the plywood again. (Bridgeport are you listening? DON’T paint over public art, please!)

In January, Karl and I were romping through Williamsburg in Brooklyn and I captured another Robot Nick — thrilled to see he is beautifying the streets.

I was also so sad to see the robot painted over. It was a joy to see on the boring plywood. I hope he might come back sometime.
