Pictoplasma | Luke Ramsey and Islands Fold™

by Karl on April 10, 2010

Luke Ramsey was the last speaker at Pictoplasma on Friday evening and presented an interesting concept — collaboration as a way of life.

We rent the house we live in, so we keep things simple by only having one guest stay with us. Selling art online is the business side of Islands Fold. The residency is not a business, but a way to make friends and art.

Not a new concept but one that made a lot of sense. Toss the egos aside — share the experience not because you have to but because you want to. Luke Ramsey described himself as getting his education by traveling to other parts of the world before finding his voice and what would eventually drive his passion — drawing and creating art for a living. While others have pursued a career trying to find what would support them — Luke’s core reason simplifies the collaborative model becoming more popular every day. Work with others all the time.

Luke started his presentation by describing his imagery for the poster that represents his unique project — Islands Fold™. Created and operated by Angela Conley and himself, Islands Fold™ is an independent publisher and artist residency established on Pender Island B.C., Canada in the spring of 2006. In the beginning they offered residency to artists at no charge. Recently with rising costs and no grant funding, they ask for donations based on what is comfortable to the artist in residency. To date the have invited over 30 artists to their home to share and enjoy the spirit of artistic collaboration.
