Scott Citron is a founding member and current chairman of the New York chapter of the InDesign Users’ Group, the world’s largest. He is also a member of the Art Directors Club and on the board of the Type Directors Club. Scott has taught InDesign at Parsons School of Design, Pace University, New School University, NYU, Fashion Institute of Technology, The Cooper-Union, and the Type Directors Club. He is the author of Professional Design Techniques with Adobe Creative Suite 3.

We met Scott through our friend Ilene Strizver in 2008 when we were looking for an Adobe expert for our PUSH Mastering InDesign workshop. Since then Scott has worked with us on several events. He is a smart, down-to-earth, engaging speaker with a pithy sense of humor who can craft his training to suit group or individual needs like no one else I’ve met.

Last night we attended the February InDesign User Group meeting at the SVA Theater. First up was New Jersey based designer and consultant, Bob Levine. Bob provides InDesign training and guidance in developing efficient, collaborative workflows to those moving from QuarkXPress or PageMaker. He is also an Adobe Certified Expert in both InDesign and InCopy, and has written articles for InDesign Magazine. Bob discussed the ins-and-outs of moving from print design to web design including a demonstration of Adobe BrowserLab. Bob shared tips and tricks on the good, bad and ugly of moving content from InDesign to Dreamweaver, best practices to assure compliance with web standards and some of the major pitfalls awaiting the unprepared print designer.

The second speaker was Gabriel Powell, the author of Instant InDesign, Learn Adobe Photoshop CS4 by Video, and a contributing author to the InDesign Magazine and Illustrator CS2 WOW! Book. He is also an Adobe Certified Instructor and CTT+ Certified Trainer. As the Training Director for Metafusion Training, Gabriel teaches InDesign, InCopy, and other applications to creative professionals throughout the United States and Western Europe. He specializes in automated publishing, template building, and streamlining publishing workflows. Gabriel is also the founder of the Portland InDesign User Group and the founder and chapter leader of the Amsterdam InDesign User Group in The Netherlands. Gabriel shared an introduction on creating eBooks. It was a fast-paced and fascinating foray on how to convert an InDesign file into an EPUB file that can be read on a computer, smartphone, or dedicated eBook reader.

This was a great night of learning among friends and colleagues. Our recommendation? Sign-up for the New York City InDesign User Group now and we’ll see you there in March!
