Mutant Monkees Meet the Masters of the Multi-Media Manipulation Machine!

Our memories sometimes trigger when we least expect it. I snapped this photo of Magic Eyes Story Set — “another fine product from gaf” — at the Elephant’s Trunk flea market recently. It reminded me of the time I worked on illustrations for Mutant Monkees Meet the Masters of the Multi-Media Manipulation Machine! with Davy Jones and Alan Green in the early 90s.

These were the days when in between the time it took to implement each simple task in Photoshop you could run to the store, cook dinner, do a load of wash, go the movies — or any activity that took about an hour. It was painfully slow to work in high-res. The result is a book with soft images and cheesy effects by many of the known suspects doing that kind of illustration back in the day. Worth a chuckle when I come across it on my bookshelf or unearth some of the things Davy sent my son when I was working on the project — autographed Monkees t-shirts and the like.

My long-time friend, Margaret Bodell, got me this groovy bracelet when I got the gig.

I am thankful today for the speed of my machines. Perhaps one day, we will all be working at the speed of our minds …

And, for those of you interested — you can get a used copy of the book super-cheap on amazon these days. I have a feeling the available copies are plentiful.
