Hello Kitty Madness at the Sanrio Small Gift Show during Art Basel Miami Beach 2010

by kHyal on December 20, 2010

The Sanrio Small Gift Show was a highlight of Art Basel Miami this year. Being an old school (early 80s) Hello Kitty fanatic and a lover of contemporary art, this show had me high on the fumes of both.

A continuation of Sanrio’s 50th anniversary celebrations — a pop-up store and art exhibit were installed in the Wynwood Arts District of Miami, coinciding with Art Basel Miami Beach.

The show featured 50 internationally-recognized artists, each selected by curator R. Rock Enterprises to create original works inspired by their fave Sanrio characters.

The 8,000 square foot custom space  showcased works by Shepard Fairey, Niagara, Jason Alper, Adam Wallacavage, Mark Mothersbaugh, Richard Colman, Mike Shinoda and Seonna Hong and others. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the original work and limited-edition prints was donated to Hands On Miami, a non-profit, volunteer based organization that brings hands-on community support to individuals & families throughout Miami-Dade County.

There was also a separate exhibition of Sanrio-inspired works by artist AnthonyLister.

Works shown can be found at this link.

This looks like good stuff. I am upset with HK; the NY store is is just couture with a somehow lifeless HK theme. and no fun little stuff. I hardly go there anymore.
