Riddle me this Batman. Get layers of purple glitter to stick to vinyl — make it weatherproof, flexible and clear. Impossible you say? After exploring a few options and having discussions with masters of materials, I was having difficulty coming up with a solution. Two options: use some weird polymer that is waterproof, but not flexible, or a silicone acrylic that is flexible, but difficult to work, with and not really all that clear.
kHyal™’s public Art project involved an outdoor 8’ x 8’ one-piece vinyl sheet, illustrated with glorious kHyal™ sKwirlPop art and friends. Various parts of the illustration were going to be glitterized and the two key characters — Blip™ and the Weather Skwirl™ were the tricky parts — heavy glitterization on the body and sunglasses.
I tried a few acrylic-type products with marginal success. Then we made a stop at the RISD 3D Store after interviewing Industrial Design students, and I hit pay dirt — clear spray replicating the same material dip used for rubberizing tool handles. Solving a problem without knowing how or what to use to finish a project — innovation inspiration!
