Custo | A Barcelona Fashion Brand Bursting with Color and Energy

by kHyal on December 24, 2009

I love Barcelona, so I guess it makes sense that one of my favorite fashion lines is by Custo.

Custo founders, David and Custodio Dalmau, had started a line of men’s shirts, later adding a women’s line in the 80s. However, it was their world bike trip that inspired the current splashy, bold style as the brothers became fascinated with the Californian lifestyle during the their visit — and Custo was born in 1996.

Their bright, well-designed, funky t-shirts, had an emphasis on creativity and individuality, during a time when minimalism was in vogue which meant the Dalmau brothers were taking a significant risk. They showed their first collection at the 1997 New York Fashion Week where Syl Tang reported on Custo, “Flashy. Cool. The look is Faye Dunaway gone British urchin meets 1970´s housecoat prints!”

I stop in the SoHo Custo stores at 474 Broome Street and 145 Spring Street frequently for a burst of design inspiration from colors and patterns juxtaposed to ignite and refuel the imagination with magnetic energy and incredible style. When I wear Custo — I feel as if I’m enveloped in a battery pack. Sure cure for the Winter blues!
