Box office | Offices made of shipping containers

by Karl on October 1, 2010

As part of The Better World by Design Conference — Box Office hosted the Friday night social to cap off the evening. The mixer was a huge hit — 3 distinct food vendors, Chez Pascal, La Strada Wood Fired Pizza, and PVD Juice Co. Newton Vineyards and Trinity Brewhouse hosted the exclusive wine and beer tasting. A live Video Mixing and musical performance by DJ Lively Experiment and Thirsty Sounds set the vibe.

The unique space was created by Peter Gill Case of Truth Box, Inc. in collaboration with Joe Haskett of Distill Studio — Designer and Stack Design Build LLC — Builder. The space is an achievement in sustainable design, using 25% less energy than a conventional new office building to operate.

12 office/studio spaces constructed from 32 recycled shipping containers on an abandoned strip of Providence history — the former Harris Lumber site. On September 15th — move in day. 5 of the 12 office are occupied and 2 more will be “live” on November 1st.   As you can see from the images, it’s still a work in progress, but we’ll be done in a matter of weeks not months.

More of alternate space exploration of this type should be considered when raw material and new building it at a premium. Speaking to Peter Gill Case about the why, his explanation revolved around taking available containers and the love of trains — right next to the train tracks and creating unique environments for office space. I think — inside the box will have a new definition.
