I was introduced to the Boblbee brand in the late 90s by Jackie Lightfield — my friend and business partner at our interactive agency, blowtorch. The shiny chrome surface of the Megalopolis backpack exemplified my style — sleek, on-the-go, and ready to rocket!
Since that time I have owned many Boblbee products, a purple high-tech laptop bag, and a series of small hard-shelled backpacks. Unfortunately, my favorites are out of production — like my silver metal Scorpia bag. I stocked up when I realized this, but broke out the last new one this month. I also have the cosmic swirl Scarabee for more casual times when I have to carry less.
Boblbee was founded by designer Jonas Blanking, who has an unconventional approach. “It’s high performing fashion within the world of innovation technology and searching nomads. Some see our products as engineered to solve a problem, others use them to create art. We believe in mobility and freedom in an ever-changing world.”
After just checking out the Boblbee offerings again recently — I’ve decided to go with the Velocity 15 next — it’s marketed to “girls” as an urban backpack, and will fit my MacBook Air. However, I can see from the photos it doesn’t have the sophistated handle for carrying at your side, nor the sleek metal hardware attaching the straps, so it’s still not the masterful work the Scorpia was.
Hopefully — in time — something even more dynamically fashion forward will be designed for us creative nerds who crave techo-fashion to carry their devices and glitter. Meanwhile — these will do just fine.
