Being kidnapped by kHyal to Block Island this past Sunday was a much needed two-day vacation. For both of us — Block Island is heaven on earth. The photo above could north in Canada or in some remote part of the world. This rocky beach is less than 100 yards off the road around the corner from the Atlantic Inn. I’ll save the rich history of the island for another feature.
Two hours by car plus a short ferry ride and you arrive at the best kept secret in New England. Under 10 square miles of what the last glacial period left behind over 21,000 years ago. 13 miles off the Rhode Island coast, Block Island is a true gem. From Point Judith — the high speed ferry service will get you there in 30-minutes. For ultra-fast fast service — catch the 11-minute flight at Westerly Airport for a mere $84.00 round trip by single engine puddle jumper.
Rain or shine — foggy or clear — the weather can change hourly. The more extreme and intense, the more we like it. The best — low key and simple with superior beaches — from smooth sand to extra rocky. The Nature Conservancy added Block Island to its list of “The Last Great Places.”
