Ancient Typography | The Stone Age Alphabet

by kHyal on February 1, 2010

E-Fitz-RockI was inspired by our time at Praxium Press in Atlanta over the weekend — and then by Karl’s post of yesterday — to dig out this pic of our friend E Fitz Smith. I took this of her in 2008 when Karl discovered the lowercase “e” rock on his favorite beach on Block Island. We both knew it had to be gifted to Eileen who uses a lowercase e as a digital mark when signing her awesome illustrations.

Karl loves rocks. He also loves typography. He continues to hunt down the ice age alphabet.

Have you discovered any ancient letter forms lately? We’d love to see them!

This is the stuff of poetry, the earth dreaming us, our letters into being. Go Karl, who like the poet Charles Olson, is also an archaeologist of the morning.

…You can find instances of the Elder Futhark, the first 24 letter script, everywhere around you in nature
