The 18th Annual Outsider Art Fair

by kHyal on February 8, 2010

I have been attending the Outsider Art Fair since its inception 18 years ago, and always look forward to it. Along the way I have made many friends, and in the old days had my work represented there. I liked it better when it was held at the Puck Building (for the first 16 years) but the art still shines, even when hung in a pretty corporate setting.

If you don’t know what Outsider Art is, I suggest reading Roger Cardinal’s seminal book by the same name, Outsider Art. And, if you want want a constant stream of inspiration you can subscribe to the UK Magazine Raw Vision — the world’s only international magazine of outsider art, art brut, visionary art and contemporary folk art. You can also become a fan of Raw Vision magazine on Facebook.

Karl and I went to the last day of the show — which was yesterday — and, had a great time looking at work and chatting with our favorite dealers: Margaret Bodell, Frank Maresca, Henry Boxer, Bev Kaye and others. We also had a nice chat with John Maizels, the tireless champion of Raw Vision magazine.

The great thing about this work is that even though the field has been around long enough to be somewhat cliche — it’s still full of surprises from the dealers who really understand quality — and therefore incredibly inspiring. If you didn’t make it this year, put it on your calendar for next. It’s put on by Sanford L. Smith and Associates, so check out their website for the deets.

Food Patterns and Arrangements

by Karl on February 6, 2010

At the Wholefoods at Columbus Circle we encountered beautiful patterns and arrangements — not architecturally or in the flower section but within the produce section. Shapes and colors neatly were neatly composed in a systematic organic and stunning presentation. My favorite shot — Oranges with pineapple tops landscape. You can see the forest from the rinds.

Included also, a couple of dog biscuits packages from the pet isle. Great illustrations — we know how hard it is to get our pets to wear hats.

Live Long and Prosper (Thanks Mr. Spock)

February 3, 2010

We’re positive thinkers, though sometimes at a loss for what to say during certain situations. Like our wedding — when our vows were three lines of technical lingo — then we turned to one another and said “Live long and prosper,” while making the appropriate hand gestures.
It happened in a more casual situation last week [...]

Exploring a special surface — barking up the wrong tree?
For centuries — raising aesthetic qualities to decorate, this art form is becoming more main-stream.

Ancient Typography | The Stone Age Alphabet

February 1, 2010

I was inspired by our time at Praxium Press in Atlanta over the weekend — and then by Karl’s post of yesterday — to dig out this pic of our friend E Fitz Smith. I took this of her in 2008 when Karl discovered the lowercase “e” rock on his favorite beach on Block Island. [...]

Typography Illustrates Your Personality

January 29, 2010

Designers have an endless supply of type choices — basic to stylized. Using software or hand skills — customization can conform to your personality or represent a brand. After reading Seth Godin’s take on this topic — I felt compelled to push the message again.
